Breakfast : A Mother's Love (Lifetime Reflection)

Sunday, May 31, 2015

Four years ago, I just started living at Malang as a new undergraduate student of University of Brawijaya. At the very start, I wondered that I would live alone, taking care of things, handling problems by myself, and many more. My mother also worried about my diet. There were stories that many wandering students suffer stomach disorder (gastritis) because of irregular diet when they lived separately from home. Malang is located about 930 km (566 miles) from my hometown, a place I had never been there before.
Before I went to Malang, my mother gave me many advices about how life ahead. One of what she said, “Keep your health, watch your diet, and always have a breakfast before starting your activity everyday!”. One reason why she always prepared breakfast every morning for our family was she wanted her husband and her children to stay healthy and be energetic doing activities. She was quite strict in controlling “when and what” we eat. Simple, but very meaningful.
I’ve been busy with my college life; lecture class, study club, group discussion, student organization, hang out with friends, travelling, etc. I never forget what my mother said, so I always have a breakfast everyday at 6.15 AM before going to campus. Comparing to my college friends, I found that I am the one who has a breakfast as a routine activity. Most of them would like to have it only sometimes or after 9 AM after first class finished. The others aren’t accustomed to have breakfast, so they prefered to merge it with lunch at about 11 AM (they called it BRUNCH – Breakfast & Lunch at one time). I can’t imagine how I can do my activities in that condition. It can be a serious problem when we didn’t supply energy through a breakfast and we should work hard until noon.
Many people ignore body’s basic needs (food and rest) for the sake of work. Look at ourselves. Have we had our regular diet daily? Have we fulfilled our body’s need of energy properly? Have we cared about our health? Let’s have a reflection. If we pay attention and make health as a priority, we won’t force our body without giving its rights. If we keep our regular diet, at least we are safe from gastritis and other stomach disorder. Imagine if all people care about their health, at least there will be only a few number of illness in this world.
There is a proverb “Men Sana In Corpore Sano” that means “inside a healthy body there is a strong soul”. Healthy is precious. Some people say that it is expensive. Without being healthy, all we have (moment, wealth, etc) won’t be joyable. That’s why I want to keep my health so I can enjoy life more. Let’s start from a small and pleasant one : having a breakfast!
